I wrote “The Mercenary” as part of a Los Angeles edition of The Bushwick Book Club, where we each had to write a song about Jonathan Ames’s novella “You Were Never Really Here.”
Here’s the music video – the first one I’ve made myself. You might recognize some heavily edited footage from Lynn Ramsey’s film based on the book.
Eventually I recorded the song with Luke Temple producing, Steve Marion (Delicate Steve) on guitar, Kosta Galanopoulos on drums, and Doug Stuart on bass. We tracked the band live at Altamira Sound in Alhambra, with Rob Shelton engineering and later mixing. Jake Supple engineered some overdubs, and Mike Nolte at Eureka Mastering mastered the song along with the rest of the album.
